Working with events

To manipulate an event in the event list, you must first select it.

You can use the event list to perform the following tasks:

Selecting and deselecting events
To work with one or more events in the event list, you must first select the events. You can then use the options in the Alerts menu to manipulate the events. You can also deselect one or more events from a list of selected events.
Acknowledging and deacknowledging events
You can acknowledge and deacknowledge events in the event list only if you have permission to do so.
Prioritizing events
You can prioritize events in the event list by changing the event severity, escalating or de-escalating the event, suppressing the event, hiding the event, and indicating that the event is "in maintenance".
Assigning ownership to events
When an event arrives from a probe, the event is owned by the nobody user unless ownership of the event has been assigned to a specific user. Users with appropriate privileges can take ownership of events throughout the problem lifecycle, or assign events to a specific user or group.
Refreshing an event list
The event list refreshes automatically at regular intervals to show all incoming alerts. You can choose to refresh the event list between the configured intervals to view all the latest alerts at the current point in time.
Freezing an event list
You can freeze any open event list so that updates from the ObjectServer are not displayed.
Resolving events
From the event list, you can display a list of known resolutions, which are determined by the class of the event.
Deleting events
You can delete an event only if you have permission to do so.
Displaying event information in full
From the event list, you can view full details of any selected events. Event information that is stored in the alerts.status, alerts.details, and alerts.journal database tables is shown.
Adding events to the task list
You can use the task list to identify events that require special attention. Adding events to the task list works in conjunction with the Task List event list filter.
Viewing related events
The event list contains tools that can help you to locate related events on the network. You can view various types of events that are related to a selected event.
Restricting the number of rows displayed
Your system administrator can restrict the number of rows that you can see in the event list, and give you the ability to change the number of rows that are displayed, within a defined range. These permissions are configured in the View Builder.
Maintaining a journal for an event
Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus provides a journal facility within which you can enter and store event history information. You can maintain a journal for any event in the event list.
Searching for event list data
You can search for event list data in a number of ways. You can enter specific text to search for, use a filtering facility to quickly find matching occurrences of data, and filter event list data by severity.
Automatically viewing updates to the event list
You can control how the event list scrolls when an update occurs. The Jump to Top feature can help you to quickly review updated events.
Copying data from the event list
You can copy event data from the event list to the clipboard for use in other applications.
Changing the event information displayed
You can change the columns that are displayed within the current event list by editing the event list view, or by selecting a different view. You can also edit the filter criteria that is used by the current event list, or select a different filter for the event list.
Printing the contents of an event list
You can print the current view of an event list. Different print options are available for UNIX and Windows. On UNIX, you can control the formatting of the output.
Using tools to manage events
Your system administrator can define tools to be used for manipulating events in the event list, and add these tools to the Tivoli Netcool/OMNIbus desktop menus for your use. You can use such tools to run SQL commands on the ObjectServer, and to run external commands such as a local application batch file, or script.
